This is a soil penetration testing device used to measure the dynamic penetration resistance of soil at the current location in order to understand the hardness or softness of the ground and the degree of compaction.

This is a test devised by the Public Works Research Institute of the Ministry of Construction, which involves freely dropping a hammer with a mass of 5±0.05 kg from a height of 500±10 mm to determine the number of impacts required to achieve a penetration of 100 mm, thereby simply assessing the dynamic cone penetration resistance of the ground.
